Blog Post #1: Let’s get started!

Welcome to Renee’s place! This is a site where you can get your updates on class articles and readings, but also where you can get your daily dose of perspective and info about music, art, life, and anything else worth commenting on!

Expectations:

I am super excited to place myself out of my comfort zone and write on my own personal domain that anyone can access! One expectation I have for this first-year seminar is that I will need to/will become comfortable with presenting my opinion and insight to the public, which sounds a little scary to me! I am also expecting my writing skills to flourish as I will be blogging and expressing my personal ideas and analysis in both academic and non-academic settings. I will need to fuse my non-academic love for speaking my mind with my academic perspective as I will be commenting and providing insight on texts, passages, and articles received in class.

Having a Presence:

Having an online presence with a Berg Builds Domain means, Wow, I’m in college now. It signifies that I am a part of this school’s online platform for student expression, as I can have the ability to speak freely about academic or non-academic topics on my own personal domain. Having an online presence at Muhlenberg is a privilege because I can not only express myself in a productive way, but I can also read about the perspectives of my fellow classmates on their domains! Having an online presence at Muhlenberg makes me feel like I am apart of the family!

It’s a takeover!!!

Technology has taken over so many aspects of my life. That’s just how it is. And I think that’s how it is for most people that belong to a University or work at a job or internship. The fact of the matter is that the world is revolutionizing itself to become more efficient and user-friendly with the help of our hand-held tablets, iPhones, laptops, etc. And to be honest, I’m a little scared! I use technology a whole lot whether it be for writing my assignments for class, using social media, or contacting family members and friends around the world. I tap screens and press computer keys 24/7 to help me be up to date on my assignments, birthdays, workshops. Its almost taken over my life! Technology is great to aid in your daily tasks and needs, however, it is only great when you know how to use it! The new software to install, iCloud passwords, online accounts, intimidate me as I think I’m not so tech-savvy. But, I still use numerous technological applications every day. In hopes to balance out my technology use, I try and exercise record keeping (hand-written calendar), and I promote more face-to-face conversations! Basic summary: I use technology a lot, I’m scared to use it incorrectly, and I try to keep in touch with the more authentic side of living.

Criticism:

Having an online academic presence automatically implies hearing insight from fellow classmates, teachers and professors, and the general public. It’s not like you post something, people read it, and then no one has an opinion about what you concluded from an article or passage of text. People will have comments and critiques of my work, and the fact that it is public is a little worrisome. However, it is important to be open to new ideas and perspectives that are different of my own to not only better the content of my blogs, but the quality of my writing as well.
